Numerous archaeological sites, caves of Byzantine monks, Norman churches; these traces of the past are part of the scenery and belong to some of the most rare and renowned cultural heritage sites in Italy. The many museums in the region have treasures from these eras, for instance, the National Museum of Reggio Calabria, in which the famous bronze statue of Riace, the glorious warrior, is on display. The famous actor and author, Gabriele D’Annunzio, described the beach promenade in Reggio Calabria as the most beautiful strech of water in Italy.
